Buying a single family home or detached dwelling can come in many shapes or sizes. In fact it could even be a duplex (attached half house) With the purchase of a single family home, you own the structure and the property that your home sits on (or lot). You can find single family homes all over the city in different prices ranges and condition. In the purchase of a house often utilities and taxes can be more expensive. Since you are responsible for the property your home sits on there may also be additional expenses for landscaping and home maintenance. Many first time home buyers start out thinking that they can buy a home and fix it up a little, while this might be true, fixing a home can be an expensive process.

Calgary Condos

If you are like most Calgary first time home buyers you are likely to be looking into the purchase of a condo. Calgary offers many different types of condo lifestyle dependent on the area and community you choose. There are also different types of condos to consider, there are apartment style condos, townhouse style and even some detached condos. The word condominium actually refers to a type of ownership rather than a specific style of housing.

Purchasing a condo has a certain piece of mind that is different than single family ownership. The exterior maintenance is all taken care of and you don’t have to worry about yard work and snow shoveling. But yes there is a cost that is associated with having the carefree lifestyle, it is a condo fee.  The condo fees can vary in each building and typically are dependent on what is included in the fees. Buildings with more amenities typically have higher condo fees associated with them. It wise to consider what you want vs. need when it comes to your budget and the different condos and fees associated with the different amenities. Some condo fees may include some utilities or all of them so it is important to compare apples to apples when looking at the options.
